Columbia Heights Area and Community Information
In the 19th century, Columbia Heights was situated on the estate of the Holmead family. The estate called Pleasant Plains was used as farmland. An engraver bought 121 acres of the Holmead estate in 1815 to form an estate called the Stone Farm. At the same time around 1822, the campus of the George Washington University was completed. Columbia Heights homes for sale were at a premium as the horse-drawn streetcars began to show up after the Civil War. The streetcars made it easy for residents to commute to Columbia Heights to downtown, which stimulate the area’s development as a suburb. In 1871, Congress passed an act to extend the boundaries of the District of Columbia, which encompassed Columbia Heights. Famed Senator John Sherman bought land including the Stone Farm and developed a subdivision of the city. Sherman referred to the community as Columbia Heights. Around 1900, Columbia Heights became synonymous with upscale suburban living. The area was designed to appeal to high ranking military officers and government officials. Some notable turn-of-the-century Columbia Heights residences included Ambrose Bierce, Chief Justice Melville Fuller, Justice John Marshall Harlan, Sinclair Lewis, and Jean Toomer. The popularity of the neighborhood led to the erection of several large apartment buildings. The mid-1900s brought a change in demographics and decline following the 1968 race riots along the 14th Street Corridor. However, the area underwent massive revitalization in 1999 focused around the metro station.

Local schools are zoned to the District of Columbia Public Schools and include elementary, middle, high, and public charter schools. The current area has a variety of restaurants and entertainment. A variety of shops are nearby. Available housing ranges from elite high priced houses to low income condominiums. The area is a Mecca for those who want an urban scene with a lot of activities to do.

The community center offers recreations in the form of basketball courts, tennis courts, a swimming pool, and playing fields. Another recreation opportunity is at the Dance Institute of Washington, a 12,000 square foot facility opened in 2004. Near the Dance Institute is the historic Tivoli Theater. The movie theater was originally built in 1924 but fell into disrepair. In 2004, renovations on the Tivoli Theater were completed and it reopened as the home of the GALA Hispanic Theater.
